Portlock is part of Hawaii Kai, with Hawaii Kai Shopping Center and Koko Marina Center nearby for any shopping needs. Kahala is next door, with Kahala Mall, Kahala Beach, and Waialae Country Club to visit. There are several schools in Hawaii Kai and Kahala, though the half-hour commute to Honolulu from Portlock is manageable as well. 

With Koko Head on one side and Maunalua Bay on the other, Portlock has a panoramic view of the island’s great natural features. The stretch of beach in front of Portlock is public, but feels private since beachgoers can only enter by passing through privately owned roads. The waters are calm, and from there, you can get a good look at Diamond Head too. Portlock Point, a cliff overlooking the sea, is a great place to watch the sunset. Koko Kai Mini Beach Park is another lookout with livelier waves that crash against the cliffs, so it’s best to stay higher up. Hanauma Bay, famous for its sparkling waters and snorkeling to see marine life, is close by. Hiking buffs will enjoy the Koko Head Crater Trail, a climb of more than a thousand steps to the top where the breathtaking view makes it all worth it.
